Please be clear what these pages are about: We are not criticising BW here. We know that BW is aware of these problems and is doing what it is able with the money available. Its money has to be prioritised which means that it is not available for structures such as those shown here.

What is needed is for people who use these waterways to contact MPs and Ministers to continue putting pressure on Government to provide adequate funding for the waterways.

These deteriorating assets illustrate why better funding is essential.

Bruce Napier travels around the canal system on his boat "Sanity". He writes about his travels on his blog.
He noticed that a large hole has appeared in the towpath under Bridge 11 on the Macclesfield Canal, at High Lane.
He says: "The hole was about a foot across and 18 inches to two feet deep. It was smack in the middle of the quite narrow towpath in the bridge 'ole, so definitely tricky to avoid!" He describes it as a "real ankle trapper" but it sound more like a leg breaker!
Bruce says that it is a good example of the sort of minor problem that can only get worse under the funding squeeze.
