A fine sunny day greeted 34 narrowboats, and lots of curious visitors to the Tarleton Basin at the southern end of the Ribble Link in Lancashire. Certainly the largest number of boats at this location in living memory!

MP meets boaters
Local Labour MP David Borrows talks with boaters.

Local Labour MP David Borrows attended as well as local press and spent some considerable time discussing the DEFRA issues with many of our boaters. He stated he was convinced our efforts, whilst not likely to change the decisions already made over funding, will have a big impact on future spending reviews. He assured us that the subject was being discussed all the time at Westminster and in general our case was viewed as positive. He will take up his options regarding our petition.

We were disappointed that there was very little presence, despite invitations, from other user groups (IWA up here did have their AGM today, to be fair. and provided publicity materials and support) but fishermen, ramblers, canoe clubs etc just showed no interest. If nothing else however we have created a really strong bond between boaters on this arm and future events will be well supported. Many more people also understand the issues clearer and can pass on the message!
